Code-share
A codeshare is an agreement between two or more airlines to put each other’s flight numbers on flights operated by a certain airline. For example; Lufthansa works together with United Airlines. Many flights from United’s hub in New York to American domestic destinations also carry a LH (Lufthansa) flight number.
This allows Lufthansa to sell tickets from its bases to more destinations than only the ones that it flies to in the USA (ie. Munich -> Albany, NY through New York in which the second flight is operated by United). Lufthansa does the same in Europe; offering United many destinations.
